J. Sebastian Danobeitia, MD, PhD, has joined the medical staff at Baylor Annette C. and Harold C. Simmons Transplant Institute. An abdominal transplant surgeon specializing in liver, kidney, pancreas and islet transplantation, Dr. Danobeitia is part of the transplant team at Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas, part of Baylor Scott & White Health.
“The aspect of islet transplantation that truly fascinates me is its innovative nature. It’s not only minimally invasive, but also a blend of advanced technology and sophisticated science,” Dr. Danobeitia says. “The profound impact this field has on enhancing patients’ quality of life is remarkable, as evidenced in applications like auto-transplantation for those with chronic pancreatitis experiencing severe, intractable pain. The potential of islet cell transplantation extends well beyond diabetes and is marked by dynamic and ongoing research. My enthusiasm continues to grow for the expanding role of cellular therapies, particularly in critical areas such as cancer treatment, regenerative medicine and autoimmune disease. These domains showcase the remarkable successes we’ve achieved, and they hint at a future brimming with further advancements and opportunities.”
Dr. Danobeitia earned his medical degree from the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana School of Medicine in Bogota, Colombia. He then earned a doctorate in biomedical sciences from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, with a focus on transplant immunology and islet transplantation. Dr. Danobeitia then completed a fellowship in abdominal transplant surgery at the University of Wisconsin Hospitals and Clinics.
“Joining the medical staff at Baylor Scott & White Annette C. and Harold C. Simmons Transplant Institute is a matter of great pride for me.” Dr. Danobeitia continues. “It’s a privilege to be part of this historic program, renowned globally for its pioneering work in transplantation. The institute stands out to me, especially as it hosts one of the top five largest islet transplant programs in the nation, which adds to the excitement. This role perfectly aligns with my professional aspirations, providing a unique platform for impactful work and allowing me to be a part of groundbreaking advancements in the field.”
